To make you all stop begging me, the best books of the year, from a poet and an industry professional (this why I put TITLES IN CAPS), are:

1. DON'T CRY - Mary Gaitskill
2. COLUMBINE - David Cullen
3. EVERYTHING RAVAGED, EVERYTHING BURNED - Wells Tower
4. All of SWIMMING except for the ending - Nicola Keegan
5. BORN ROUND I guesss but this just doesn't, in my heart, feel like "top five material" - Frank Bruni

Why aren't all women rained Mary Gaitskill books, like the Joker drops dollar bills from the sky into Times Square in the first Batman movie? Why wasn't everyone talking about the Columbine book (aka IN COLD BLOOD 2) all the time?! I only really feel super-strongly about those top two.

Books that I thought came out this year but in retrospect they didn't but would totally dominate that list if they had: BOTTOMLESS BELLYBUTTON, THE BOOK THIEF

Books that I haven't read yet that will probably be on this list: CHRONIC CITY, FEMALE CHAUVINIST PIGS, A GATE AT THE STAIRS.

Books that I haven't read yet that will maybe on this list: LET THE GREAT WORLD SPIN, that TC Boyle doorstop my mother lent me, A SHORT HISTORY OF WOMEN, OPEN: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
