A recent trend in my office has been getting ice cream cakes on birthdays. I hate ice cream cake. If I want ice cream, I'll have ice cream. If I want cake, I'll have some cake (or a cupcake if I'm with a whimsical friend). I don't want the two to meet.
This isn't some sort of bubble tea or bacon chocolate bar thing where two jarring tastes combine for the better; this is a sloppy melty mess that always have too many "jimmies." You always feel sick after, too. I call a boycott.

I don't like ice cream cake any more than you do, BUT:
Your office gets cake on people's birthdays??? Come ON! What's next -- "My office gave me this free golden retriever puppy but I prefer German shepherds"?
There's no cake to be had at New York Magazine. The other day the entire office was filled with cake, because they were shooting wedding cakes for the Weddings issue. Did they share afterwards? No. :(
For years, my sister only ever wanted an ice cream cake on her birthday. Ice cream cake is NOT good, especially the Carvel kind. Ugh, give me something solid please.

What did I do? I just said she was a straight shooter. I calls them like I sees 'em.
I generally had the exact same stance on ice cream cake (often saying the exact same "If I want ice cream I'll have ice cream..." line). However, recently I have been at two parties where they happened to get the same exact Baskin Robbins ice cream cake. It was delish. It had vanilla and chocolate ice cream with a fudgy center. Loved it.
Later that day, I thought about how, like ice cream cake, relationships can surprise you.
