Can someone clarify for me...who am I supposed to be rooting for in history, Catholics or Protestants? Not "riffing" here. People who wanted boring church ceremonies and pressed Giles Corey to death, or people who used torture racks and wasted lots and lots of money on gold leaf? Someone tell me what to think, besides my biased Catholic roommates, because I have wondered this for a long time.

this is a hard question. on one level, you think "protestants" because they are less decadent/"founded america." but catholics got it pretty rough in the 20th century and some of them died in the holocaust.

catholics get style points, plus protestants do weird shit like purity balls

This is like asking whether you should root for Democrats or Republicans over the course of American history: it's permissible -- nay, advisable -- to switch allegiances after a certain point. I'm Team Protestant up through the French Revolution or so, and then, once the Catholics become the underdogs, I'm on their side.

yeah you guys have summarized my confusion pretty accurately, notably frankie. also right now francie nolan in a tree grows in brooklyn is catholic and she is obviously a wonderful protagonist.

Red wine versus white wine. Depends on the meal.
